Bikinnov – the Bike Value Innovation Center Association – organized, in collaboration with ABIMOTA, the ISO/TC 149/SC 1 International Technical Committee meeting from September 11 to 13, 2024, which took place at the National Velodrome in Sangalhos, Anadia. The meeting brought together more than 40 experts from the two-wheel sector from various countries, including the United States, Australia, Germany, China, the Netherlands, England, France, Japan and Portugal, with the aim of discussing essential technical standards for the development of conventional bicycles, children’s bicycles and luggage racks.
During the meeting, the current standards in force and possible revisions were analyzed, with special emphasis on issues such as sustainability, the use of new materials and their technical characterization. Thanks to the investments it has made, BIKINNOV is prepared to play a key role in the evaluation and characterization of these new materials, making a decisive contribution to the development of standards, with a positive impact on the safety, performance, sustainability and innovation of products in the sector.
This meeting also allowed BIKINNOV to strengthen synergies with the Japan Bicycle Promotion Institute, its technological partner, which has announced that it will host the next meeting of Technical Committee ISO/TC 149/SC 1, scheduled for October 2025 in Japan. This future meeting will address issues relating to electric bicycles, a growing segment of the two-wheel market.
On the 12th, the participants visited ABIMOTA, BIKiNNOV and several leading companies in the two-wheel sector, namely: HFA – Henrique, Fernando & Alves, S.A., Alufap, Miranda & Irmão Lda, and TRIANGLE’S – CYCLING EQUIPMENTS, S.A. BIKINNOV had the opportunity to present its innovative project and the progress of the requalification works of the future facilities of its Technology and Innovation Center, which aims to establish itself as the reference center for the two-wheel sector. The positive feedback received from all those present reinforces the conviction that BIKiNNOV will play an essential role in the future of mobility, driving innovation and development.
